Tips for How to Use Your Butcher Block Conditioner

How do I properly apply my butcher block conditioner?

We'll go over some tips and tricks for how to apply your butcher block wax and oil mixture. Our conditioner will work well no matter if you are using it for a hardwood cutting board or a butcher block countertop. In addition, butcher block conditioner is also appropriate for both old and new butcher blocks. Follow the steps below:

Steps to Apply Your Butcher Block Wax:

  1. To start, always ensure that your butcher block is dry prior to applying your butcher block conditioner. For example, if you have recently washed your butcher block countertop or cutting board, you will want to have it sit overnight to make sure it is fully dry.
  2. Once the surface of your butcher block is dry, you can use the conditioner. Upon opening the jar, you may notice that the wax has a firm feeling to the touch. This is the perfect condition for applying the conditioner to your butcher block.
  3. Once you apply the conditioner, you will notice that the mixture will begin to soften. This makes it much easier to spread on the surface of the butcher block. As you apply the conditioner, be sure to use a soft cloth (lint-free is the best option). To start, use an amount that's about the size of a quarter. Feel free to add more as needed. Apply a thin layer of the mineral oil and organic wax mixture over the surface until the entire board is covered.
  4. Next, you can allow the wax mixture to sit on the butcher block for a minimum of at least 2 hours. You may also let it sit overnight.
  5. Once your wax has had a chance to sit, you can use another soft or lint-free cloth. Use this cloth to wipe off the remaining excess wax.
  6. That’s it, you’re done! You can repeat this process every two to four weeks, or as needed. More frequent use of your butcher block or cutting board will call for more frequent applications of your wax/oil.

How Often Should I Apply Butcher Block Conditioner?

You likely are wondering how often you should apply your butcher block conditioner. How frequently you should apply the conditioner depends on how often you use your countertop and how humid your home is.

On average, you will only need to apply the butcher block conditioner about only once a month. However, depending on the climate in your home, you will likely have to apply every 2-4 weeks.

Another way to tell if you need a conditioner application is when the water begins to soak into the wood, rather than beading up onto the surface as it should.

Butcher Block Conditioner vs Oil

Using a food-safe mineral oil will protect your wooden surface, while also creating an attractive flat finish and bringing out the natural coloration of the wood.

Conditioner will further maintain the durability of the butcher block. It also helps to add another layer of protection and promote the aesthetic appearance of the wood. Conditioner typically comprises of both mineral oil and beeswax and is a food-grade product.
